Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Albany, California, have found a way to streamline the process that scientists use to insert multiple genes into a crop plant. Simplot is planning to use it to introduce multiple genes into potatoes to make them resistant to late blight
Using gene editing technology such as CRISPR-Cas9, bruising and browning of potatoes can be reduced, eliminating some of the 3.6 billion lbs. of potato food waste each year.

Genetically engineered potatoes approved for Maine
With little fanfare, the Maine Board of Pesticides Control unanimously approved on Friday morning the registration of three new types of genetically engineered potatoes that have been developed by Simplot Plant Sciences.
Approval of three second generation Innate potato varieties by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration means Simplot is free to plant the potatoes this spring and sell them in the fall (Courtesy: Simplot).
