Weather patterns have continued to influence the outlook for the Canadian potato crop since UPGC’s last update. Eastern Canada (particularly PEI) has received record amounts of rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Ida.
Newly expanded french fry plants in Alberta and Manitoba may not be able to run at full capacity because there is little excess potato supply in other parts of North America.

Potato shortage looms on Prairies (Canada)
Potato processing plants in Manitoba and Alberta may not run at full capacity this winter. About 20,000 acres of potatoes were in the ground in Manitoba as of the middle of October, and growers needed two weeks of favourable weather to harvest the crop.

Frozen Potato Processing Plant of Cavendish Farms in Alberta officially open
Cavendish Farms’ newest plant is officially open for business. The announcement was made at a ceremony held today at the new Lethbridge frozen potato processing facility.
