Farmers in Central Estonia have started the cereal and potato harvest. Despite the cool spring and dry summer, this year's results are good. Potatoes from the Rebase Farm near Aravete have already reached the market, Friday's "Aktuaalne kaamera" reported.

Potato growing in Estonia has seen a three-fold decline in the past decade, ETV news show "Aktuaalne kaamera" (AK) reported Tuesday. Farmers are blaming the unprofitability of growing the tuber – which only makes money one year out of every three, they say.

Estonian Potato Growers who were unable to harvest part of their crops due to excessive rainfall last fall will receive financial support from their government.

Floods in Poland and a drought in Russia have wiped out large portions of the potato harvests in those countries, prompting their buyers to turn abroad in search of spuds.
