Asia is the world’s leading region for potato cultivation, accounting for 54% of global production and contributing approximately 175.8 million metric tons in 2023, according to the FAOSTAT data. Major potato-producing countries in Asia include China, the world’s top producer, followed by India and Bangladesh, with Pakistan and other nations also making significant contributions.

Despite a reduction in total harvested area, productivity has increased, reflecting improved efficiency driven by technology and strong government support. Beyond production, Asia plays a vital role in the global potato trade: while China and India primarily cater to domestic demand, they also export seed potatoes and processed products, and countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan are actively expanding their export capacities.

The region is experiencing rapid growth in potato processing industries, fueled by rising urbanization and shifting consumer preferences toward processed foods such as frozen French fries and potato chips.

The journey of the potato in Asia began with its introduction by European colonial powers, including the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and French, who introduced the crop through maritime trade routes and colonial outposts, likely first reaching coastal cities and highland regions where its growing conditions were favorable.

Over time, the potato's adoption across Asia was driven by population growth, food security concerns, and government policies supporting agricultural diversification. As Asian populations expanded, the demand for reliable, high-calorie crops like potatoes grew, and technological advancements in farming helped increase its cultivation.

Today, Asia leads the world in potato production, with China and India at the forefront, supported by robust research, infrastructure, and market demand.
