Potato production in Africa plays a vital role in food security and economic development, with key producers including Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Kenya, Morocco, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. The continent mainly grows Irish potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) and sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas), while traditional varieties like the Hausa potato (Solenostemon rotundifolius) are cultivated in specific regions. Egypt leads in production and export, supplying both local and international markets. Despite challenges such as poor seed quality, pests, diseases, and climate change impacts, Africa’s potato industry is growing, driven by rising urban demand, improved farming technologies, climate-resilient varieties, and expanding value-added sectors like chips and frozen fries.
Potatoes arrived in Africa relatively late, around the turn of the 20th century. Since their introduction, they have steadily become an important crop across the continent. Potatoes are now grown under a wide range of conditions — from large, irrigated commercial farms in Egypt and South Africa to small, intensively cultivated plots in the tropical highlands of Eastern and Central Africa.
