New Mexican potato variety Citlali shows resistance to late blight and zebra chip disease
In Mexico, researchers of the National Forestry, Agriculture, and Livestock Research Institute (INIFAP), part of the Mexican Ministry of agriculture (SAGARPA), have developed a new potato variety, Citlali, with improved tolerance to diseases.
The Macarena is a medium-early red skin potato variety created for the table potato and export market. The newly registered variety tolerates long periods of dry and hot weather and still generates high yields, according to breeding company Dr. K.-H. Nieh

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Albany, California, have found a way to streamline the process that scientists use to insert multiple genes into a crop plant. Simplot is planning to use it to introduce multiple genes into potatoes to make them resistant to late blight
Using gene editing technology such as CRISPR-Cas9, bruising and browning of potatoes can be reduced, eliminating some of the 3.6 billion lbs. of potato food waste each year.

The University of Maine has released a new gourmet potato variety, Pinto Gold.
The Idaho and Malheur County Oregon grow an increasing amount of non-traditional potato varieties, such as oblong, fingerling, and banana potatoes. Current regulations do not adequately address the unique varieties that are currently marketed.
