Richmond Company was founded in 1848 and renamed in 1889 after Joy Morton joined as a crucial partner. Morton Salt has grown to become a major provider of salt products for a wide range of purposes, including culinary, water softening, deicing, agricultural, and industrial.

The company's product offerings include table and specialized salts, water softeners, ice melters, and bulk deicing solutions. Morton Salt has numerous production facilities throughout North America, including underground mines, sun evaporation sites, and packaging plants.

Morton Salt is well-known for its famous "Morton Salt Girl" emblem and the slogan "When it rains, it pours," which was established in 1914 to highlight the free-flowing characteristic of its salt products.

Morton Salt was acquired by Stone Canyon Industries Holdings, Inc. from K+S Aktiengesellschaft and became a subsidiary in April 2021.
