What are Minitubers?

Minitubers are pathogen-free seed potatoes propagated from tissue-cultured plantlets under controlled environment conditions. As the first field-plantable generation derived from meristem culture, they form the basis of certified seed systems by providing:

• Genetic purity: Preservation of varietal characteristics through clonal propagation.

• Disease eradication: Elimination of viruses (PLRV, PVY), bacterial pathogens, and fungal contaminants.

• Multiplication efficiency: 10-20x faster propagation than traditional seed systems.

Minituber Production Methodology

A) Conventional Greenhouse Production

The established method uses peat-based substrates in controlled greenhouses:

• Plant density: 50-100 plants/m²
• Yield potential: 5-15 tubers/plant
• Key challenges: Substrate sterilization costs, limited root zone oxygenation 15–30% root disease losses.

B) Hydroponic

Water-based systems enhance productivity through:

C) Aeroponic
