Diacetyl was commonly used to add a buttery flavour to products such as popcorn. However, diacetyl was found to lead to severe and possibly lethal lung disease among workers exposed to the pure flavour compound. This has led to removal of diacetyl from many products and has led to corrective actions wherever diacetyl is handled.
