Avebe heeft zeven werknemers van de dextrinefabriek in Ter Apelkanaal op staande voet ontslagen wegens overtreding van het rookverbod op de werkvloer. Een woordvoerder van het aardappelzetmeelconcern heeft dat bevestigd.
De medewerkers werden vrijdag op heterdaad met een brandende sigaret betrapt in de bedieningsruimte van de fabriek, die ingrediënten voor lijmachtige producten maakt.
"Ze hebben zich schuldig gemaakt aan roekeloos gedrag dat in strijd is met ons veiligheidsbeleid", aldus de zegsman. Het rookverbod moet volgens het bedrijf te meer strikt worden gehandhaafd omdat het explosiegevaar in de fabriek groot is.
