Company Description
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) is a German university located in Erlangen-Nürnberg.

In 2019, biochemists at FAU have discovered the reason why at high temperature potato plants form less or no tubers. If the temperature rises, a so-called small RNA blocks the formation of tubers. The researchers have successfully deactivated this RNA to create potato plants that are resistant to high temperatures.

Major European project to develop heat- and drought-stress tolerant potatoes
The Faculty of Life Sciences of the University of Vienna coordinates a consortium of 17 European leading academic research institutions, potato breeders, a non-profit EU association, a government agency and a screening technology developer.
A team of biochemists at FAU led by Prof. Dr. Uwe Sonnewald have discovered why potato plants form significantly lower numbers of tubers or sometimes none at all at higher temperatures. The authors of the study from FAU (from left): PD Dr. Sophia Sonnewal

Breakthrough research: potatoes can grow at high temperatures
If there’s one thing potato plants don’t like, it’s heat. If the temperature is too high, potato plants form significantly lower numbers of tubers or sometimes none at all. Biochemists at FAU have now discovered the reason why.
